About Me and This Newsletter
A little bit about me and why I’m writing here …
Until March 2023, I spent nearly 20 years in finance. I worked on a front office trading desk, at a hedge fund, and then ultimately led an innovative data science team at an asset manager. All of this was within one firm, so I got to see how the sausage was made from a lot of different perspectives.
It was a great career – I learned to trade, to risk manage quantitatively, to invest based on deep fundamental research, and then how to do all those things but using a data science and quantitative lens.
When I left finance, it was to pursue the dream of teaching high school math. If you asked my wife after our first date, what it was I was going to do in life, she probably would have said, “He’s going to be a high school math teacher.” So, that’s what I’m doing now and loving it!
But the “markets bug” isn’t cured so easily. I love thinking about the markets. And I thought I could use this newsletter to keep engaged with the markets and to teach others about different aspects of the markets. Frankly, writing this newsletter helps me to codify my thinking and to do my best work.
You can expect me to write about relevant news analysis, data analysis that I conduct, my process for thinking about investing, and tutorials on the basic blocking and tackling of some investment techniques. Please feel free to interact, ask questions, call bullshit. Debate and disagreement are both the heart of the markets but also the heart of learning. I hope to learn along the way as well too.
Take it for what it’s worth! I’m no longer a professional, I’m a teacher. I will talk about stocks that I have in my own portfolio, and I will be clear about disclosing it. However, I will make no recommendations. Do your own research and consult a professional for the appropriateness of any investment given your goals and any constraints. As a mentor of mine used to say, “Trust, but verify!”
Happy Investing!
